tactical media projects and art installations, is a form of "culture jamming."
Shopdropping 2006 is an exhibit that includes works from 45 artists nationwide. Each participant contributed artwork to be wrapped around cans of food. Ryan Watkins-Hughes, the curator of the exhibit, takes these cans, sneaks into grocery stores and supermarkets, and replaces actual merchandise with these art-wrapped cans. This project attempts to subvert commercial space for artistic use, comment on corporate branding, and mischievously infiltrate mass-market consumerism.
Shopdropping 2006 runs through the month of April in the New York City area. The exhibit opens with a party at Maiden in Brooklyn, New York, on Saturday, April 1 (appropriately, April Fool's Day.) Curious can-hunters may pick up maps of the "participating" venues at Maiden (252 Grand Street.)
